I have postpartum leg pain and swelling. What can i do? Eight tips for healthier vitalized legs.

Growing and birthing a baby affects the body in many ways. Increased hormone and blood levels, weight gain and fluid retention can lead to swollen and painful legs with spider or varicose veins. Many healthcare providers recommend wearing compression hosiery during and after pregnancy.

Try our eight postpartum tips for healthier vitalized legs:

  • Elevate your legs as often as possible
  • Stay active during everyday tasks
  • Sit with straight instead of crossed legs
  • Invest in compression hosiery such as the VenoTrain micro compression hosiery to support veins and increase circulation
  • Get a postpartum massage
  • Stick to a low-sodium diet
  • Gently exercise after you receive clearance from your doctor
  • Keep your weight in check after giving birth
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience unusual pain, tenderness, redness and swelling in your legs or if your leg feels hot to the touch as this could be a sign of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

If you have swollen legs, experienced varicose veins during a past pregnancy or have a history of vein issues in your family – wearing Bauerfeind compression products, such as the VenoTrain micro socks, can be beneficial.

Bauerfeind’s VenoTrain micro compression hosiery supports the veins through graduated medical-grade compression, increases circulation and counteracts swelling so your legs feel vitalized. Its microfiber content of 50% makes it particularly cozy and gentle on the skin. Available as knee-high, thigh-high or pantyhose.

Postpartum joint pain can affect nearly every joint from the ankle, knee, hip, back and wrist. The main reason for joint pain is that your hormones loosen muscles, tendons and ligaments during pregnancy which can affect the body three months postpartum or even longer while breastfeeding. Joint laxity makes a new mom’s body more prone to injuries and pain. Weight gain and fluid retention put extra stress on joints, especially in the lower extremities.

Bauerfeind’s braces and supports help protect and stabilize your joints to feel confident in getting into a more active day-to-day routine.

Depending on the size of the baby bump, the curvature of the spine might increase with a forward tilt of the pelvis during pregnancy. Together with weakened and stretched core muscles after giving birth, you might feel lower back pain. Bending over to reach the baby as well as improper posture lifting and nursing the baby can aggravate postpartum back pain further.

The Bauerfeind LumboTrain back brace stabilizes the lower back area and activates abdominal and back muscles with intermittent compression. A comfortable pad in the support provides a stimulating massage effect to the muscles of the lower back with every movement to help to reduce tension and relieve pain.

While postpartum hip pain is pretty common after giving birth and can be quite debilitating. Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) can be located in the front of the pelvis (symphysis pubis), perineum or in the lower back where the SI joints are located. SI joint pain is mostly located at the lower back with dull pain sometimes radiating into the thighs and glutes.

Bauerfeind's SacroLoc belt stabilizes the pelvis with circular compression and two height-adjustable pads massaging trigger points in the lower back for targeted pain relief and support to get you back to your everyday activity.

Picking a baby or toddler up several times a day can cause pain and inflammation in the thumb tendons on the side of the wrist, also called mommy’s thumb or de Quervain’s tenosynovitis. Bauerfeind’s ManuLoc or ManuLoc Rhizo wrist braces stabilize the wrist in a neutral position without impeding the gripping motion to let the tendon heal. The ManuLoc Rhizo features a thumb spica splint for additional stabilization of the thumb.

Swelling in your hands during pregnancy and postpartum combined with frequent lifting or caring for a baby or infant can compress the median nerve in your hand and trigger carpal tunnel syndrome. You might feel a tingling sensation, burning pain or numbness in your fingers and thumb. Weakness and frequent dropping of items might be a sign of carpal tunnel as well. Bauerfeind’s ManuLoc or ManuTrain stabilizes the wrist without impeding gripping motion. Both braces can be worn at night. The ManuTrain features a two-part strap system that can be adjusted for the stabilization needed as the healing progresses.

If you experience sudden swelling of your hands accompanied by nausea, vision changes, severe headache, abdominal pain and shortness of breath, seek medical attention immediately as this could be a sign of a rare postpartum preeclampsia.

Most mothers describe SI joint pain symptoms as stabbing or dull lower back pain mostly on one side, sometimes radiating in the glutes or thigh. Walking feels tight and less fluid. Try Bauerfeind's SacroLoc SI joint belt for stability, relief and protection from recurring excessive strain. With circular compression and two height-adjustable massage pads, SacroLoc provides targeted pain relief to get you back to your normal routine.

Pregnancy hormones loosen joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments for an easier delivery and can do so even three months after giving birth. For those breastfeeding, this effect can last even longer up to a few months after nursing stops, which makes it more important to stabilize and support your joints in the first months of getting back to exercising.

Bauerfeind’s knees and ankle braces provide stability and compression to help protect your knees and ankles from strain and injury. These supports are breathable, machine-washable and fit comfortably inside shoes or under clothing.

Yes. Washing your braces, supports and compression socks or stockings regularly helps maintain their shape and last longer.

For products with Velcro straps, fasten them securely at the place provided on the brace. Remove pads when applicable, for example, on the SacroLoc. Machine-wash your brace, socks and stockings in cold water using a gentle or delicate cycle. Wash separately using a laundry detergent with no additives (do not use fabric softener or Woolite). We recommend using a washing bag for socks and stockings for extra protection. Lay flat and let it air-dry. Do not put it in the dryer. Proper washing and drying helps keep the knit’s elasticity and original fit.
